Scouting Report
Rocky Cummings is a 4-star Linebacker from Carlsbad, CA (Carlsbad) in the 2026 class. Ranked No. 397 nationally, No. 20 at LB, No. 28 in CA. Composite rating: 0.8970. Committed to University of Texas since November 25, 2025.
Physical Profile
Listed at 6-4, 227 lbs. Taller than 94% and heavier than 90% of 2026 Linebacker prospects in the SEC Scouts database (207 with a listed size).
Play Style
On film he is an aggressive, downhill edge player who wins with first-step burst and length rather than technique. He attacks the corner off the snap and generates consistent pressure (10 hurries in 8 games) even when he doesn't finish the sack. His offensive snaps at tight end/receiver show loose hips, body control and natural hands, which translate to range and ball skills from a linebacker alignment. He is still a see-ball, go-ball player whose instincts from off-ball depth have yet to be developed.
Strengths
- Pass-rush explosiveness: logged 10 hurries and 2.5 sacks in 8 senior games (3 sacks and 4.5 TFL in 7 junior games), mostly lined up off the edge, and 247 flagged his rush as 'explosive' after a standout Under Armour Los Angeles camp
- Two-way athleticism and ball skills: Carlsbad's fourth-leading receiver as a senior (11 catches, 187 yards, 8 TD), a tight end/receiver skill set that shows up as comfort in space and natural hands in coverage
- Length and frame upside: 6-4 with long levers, projected to add 30-40 lb, the kind of body that gives defensive coordinators scheme flexibility between off-ball and edge roles
- Early adjustment to college: enrolled early, added weight, and was named by Texas defensive coordinator Lance Jackson as one of three freshman defenders who surprised in fall camp; Nansen called him 'a stud'
Areas to Improve
- Off-ball processing and run fits: he played mostly off the edge in high school, so reading keys, working through traffic and fitting gaps from depth at MIKE are new skills. His 29-tackle senior total reflects a limited off-ball role and missed games more than a low ceiling, but it also means there is little film of him doing the college job
- Functional strength at the point of attack: at 220-227 he needs to add mass and play-strength to take on pulling guards and stack-and-shed against Power 4 offensive lines
- Durability and availability: an illness shortened his junior year to 7 games and he missed 3 senior games, so staying on the field through a full college season is a real question
- Coverage technique: the athletic tools are there, but zone drops, pattern matching and man leverage against backs and tight ends will need coaching
College Projection
Projected to start at MIKE behind Justin Cryer, with depth thinned by Ty'Anthony Smith's dismissal. The most realistic freshman path is special teams (his length and speed suit kick coverage) plus situational pass-rush or sub-package snaps, which would also preserve a redshirt under the four-game rule. By 2027-28, at 235-245 lb, he projects as a rotational to starting SAM/MIKE or a stand-up rush linebacker, depending on how his off-ball processing develops. His ceiling is a multi-year Power 4 starter who can move between linebacker and edge.
Best Fit
A multiple or 3-4 front that uses hybrid linebackers who can both rush the passer and drop into coverage, which is what Texas does under Pete Kwiatkowski/Lance Jackson with Nansen coaching the linebackers. The ideal role is a SAM/rush backer who lines up on the edge on passing downs and walks off the ball on early downs, using his burst and pass-catcher's hands. Programs with strong strength-and-conditioning staffs will get the most from his frame; a pure, stationary off-ball MIKE role would underuse his pass-rush skill.
