KJ Ford is a 4-star Edge Rusher from Dallas, TX (Duncanville) in the 2026 class. Ranked No. 153 nationally, No. 17 at EDGE, No. 21 in TX. Composite rating: 0.9385. Committed to University of Florida since July 10, 2025.

Physical Profile

Listed at 6-4, 250 lbs. Taller than 54% and heavier than 81% of 2026 Edge Rusher prospects in the SEC Scouts database (169 with a listed size).

Play Style

Ford is an attacking, high-motor edge player who plays downhill and tries to get into the backfield on nearly every snap, as his 33.5 TFLs over two seasons show. His first step off the snap is quick, and his main rush converts speed into power, driving through the tackle's chest to shrink the pocket instead of bending around the corner. Against the run he sets a firm edge, extends his arms to keep blockers off him, and sheds to the ball rather than getting pinned inside. He has also shown up on special teams (a blocked punt as a senior). He looks most natural rushing from a wide alignment, and in high school he played from both a three-point stance and a two-point stance.

Strengths

  • Disruption behind the line: 16 TFL and 7 sacks (57 tackles) as a junior, then 17.5 TFL, 8.5 sacks, 13 hurries, a forced fumble and a blocked punt in only 10 of Duncanville's 14 games as a senior. His rate of TFLs per game is elite for a 6A starter.
  • Power as a pass rusher: evaluators describe an effective bull rush that gets into the tackle's chest and collapses the pocket from outside. His long arms and big hands let him win with extension before a blocker can land his punch.
  • Run defense: he can stack and shed at the point of attack, with play strength that stands out for his age. That means he doesn't have to be subbed out on early downs.
  • Proven against top competition: he took over as Duncanville's main edge rusher after Colin Simmons and Alex January left and kept producing in a state-title program, so he has faced top Texas 6A offensive lines every week.

Areas to Improve

  • Counter moves: his production leans on get-off and power. Evaluators name a bigger pass-rush plan (a reliable counter off the bull rush, better hand combos, a dip/rip to turn the corner) as the key to his ceiling. Ford has said himself that pass rush and football IQ are what he is working on.
  • Consistent power and Jack coverage duties: he needs to show sudden power on every rep, not just in flashes. The Jack role at Florida also asks him to drop into curl/flat zones and play space, which he rarely did at Duncanville. His strength also has to keep pace at 250+ pounds so SEC tackles can't wash him out on down blocks.

College Projection

Florida recruited him specifically for its Jack position, a stand-up outside linebacker who rushes the passer. Beat writers and program reports named him as the 2026 signee with the clearest path to early snaps. A realistic first-year role is a rotational third-down pass rusher plus special teams, around 150-250 defensive snaps, possibly using the four-game redshirt rule depending on depth. A full offseason in the strength program should prepare him for a larger rotation in 2027 and a starting job by 2028 as a redshirt sophomore or true junior. His development depends mainly on building a counter-move plan and getting comfortable in coverage as a Jack.

NFL Outlook

He is a Day 2 NFL draft candidate if he develops. As a 6-3/250-255 edge with long arms, power and proven production, he fits the 3-4 outside linebacker / wide-9 end profile NFL teams draft in rounds 2-4. Getting to that range requires double-digit sack production in the SEC and a real counter move. Without it, he projects as a Day 3 run-setting edge who also plays special teams.

Best Fit

An odd or multiple front with a dedicated hybrid rush-linebacker (Jack/Buck/Wolf) role, where he can rush from a wide two-point stance, set the edge on early downs and only occasionally drop into coverage. Florida's Jack spot is close to ideal. He would also do well as a strong-side end in a 4-3 over front, where his power and leverage against the run are valued as much as his sack totals.

Player Comparison

Khalil Mack Buffalo • Chicago Bears/Los Angeles Chargers 78% match

Similar size profile at 6'3" 245 lbs with the versatility to play multiple positions in today's hybrid defenses. Both prospects share elite program development backgrounds and demonstrate the physical tools to transition between edge rusher and linebacker roles, with strong fundamental coaching that translates well to Power 5 competition.
