Play Style

Ruffin plays like a penetrating interior lineman who uses quickness and hand speed rather than pure power. He attacks gaps off the snap, works through contact with quick hands and gets into the backfield to disrupt run plays. His high tackle total says he pursues well for a lineman and finishes plays near the line, not just in his own gap. He moves between outside and inside alignments, which lets a coordinator move him around to create favorable matchups.

Strengths

• Explosive first step and quick hands. He wins the snap and gets into a gap before guards can set, which is why evaluators project him as a disruptive run stopper rather than just a space-eater
• Scheme flexibility. His 247 profile has him as a 5-tech who can slide to nose, so he can line up across the front and fit odd or even looks
• Senior production against 6A competition: 60 tackles, 4 TFL, 3 sacks and 2 fumble recoveries in 11 games for a 9-2 Bessemer City team that finished second in 6A Region 4. A tackle total that high shows he pursues and finishes plays, not just occupies blockers

Areas to Improve

• Pass-rush finishing. Three sacks and four TFL is modest for a player this quick, so he needs a developed plan (a counter off his quick-hands move, plus better hip flexibility to turn the corner) to become a three-down player rather than a run-down specialist
• Anchor and play strength against Big Ten double teams. At 290 he will need to add lower-body strength and weight before he can hold the point at the 1-technique against college guard-center combinations
• Pad level and consistency snap to snap. Taller interior linemen tend to rise out of their stance as plays go on, and that gets exposed much faster against college offensive linemen than against high school competition

College Projection

He is a true freshman in 2026 in Ohio State's deep defensive line room. The realistic path is rotational snaps early, with a redshirt-style development year possible under the four-game rule, while he adds weight and strength. With a full college strength program he projects as a regular in the interior rotation by 2027 and a potential starter at 3-technique by 2027-28. His quickness gives him a chance to play earlier as a situational run-down defender.

NFL Outlook

He has a mid-round-type projection if development holds, with a higher ceiling. Interior linemen with his size, first-step quickness and hand speed are valued at the next level, especially as 3-techniques in one-gap schemes. His draft stock will depend on two things: adding functional mass without losing burst, and turning his disruption into a real pass rush. Larry Johnson's track record developing linemen is a meaningful plus.

Best Fit

A one-gap, attacking 4-3 or multiple front that lets him penetrate as a 3-technique and occasionally slide out to the 5-tech. That is the style Ohio State uses under Larry Johnson, so his current landing spot suits his skills well. A two-gap, read-and-react 3-4 that asks him to absorb double teams at the nose would use his strengths least.
