Derwin Fields is a 4-star Edge Rusher from Brookhaven, MS (Brookhaven High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 225 nationally, No. 9 at EDGE. Composite rating: 0.9182. Committed to University of Texas.

Physical Profile

Listed at 6-3, 230 lbs. Taller than 4% and heavier than 35% of 2027 Edge Rusher prospects in the SEC Scouts database (26 with a listed size).

Play Style

An attacking, upfield edge who plays on the offensive side of the ball. His production profile (TFL-heavy, high sack count, forced fumbles) fits a player who wins with get-off and closing speed, collapses the pocket off the edge and finishes with the ball in mind. Brookhaven clearly let him pin his ears back as the primary rusher. The open questions for college coaches are how he handles double teams, down blocks and run fits when offenses scheme away from him.

Strengths

  • Elite backfield production: as a junior in 2025 he had 56 tackles, 26 TFL, 16 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. His two-year totals are 117 tackles, 47 TFL and 27 sacks, so the disruption is consistent and not a one-year spike.
  • Quick first step and ability to win the corner. A TFL rate near half his total tackles means he makes most of his plays behind the line rather than in pursuit.
  • Ball disruption: three forced fumbles as a junior show he attacks the football at the top of his rush instead of only chasing the sack.
  • Strong national evaluation and demand: 247 Composite four-star (#196 overall / #20 EDGE when he committed) and offers from Alabama, LSU, Georgia-area SEC programs, USC, UCLA, Texas A&M and others, which is roughly 18 Power 4 offers.

Areas to Improve

  • Play strength and mass. At about 230 pounds he will struggle to set a firm edge against SEC tackles and pulling guards until he adds 15-25 pounds of functional weight. Run defense at the point of attack is his biggest projection question.
  • Pass-rush plan and counters. Rushers who dominate 5A/6A Mississippi competition often win on speed alone. He will need a developed hand arsenal (long-arm, cross-chop, inside counter) to beat college tackles who can match his get-off.
  • Positional versatility. If Texas uses him as a stand-up edge, his drops and zone coverage will need work beyond what high school tape usually shows.

College Projection

Likely a year-one special-teams and third-down rush contributor for Texas while he adds weight in the strength program. Under defensive coordinator Will Muschamp's multiple front, he projects as a rotational rush end or Jack by year two. He can realistically compete for a starting role in year three once he is around 245-250 pounds. Texas already holds another 2027 edge commit, Cameron Hall, so his early reps will depend on how quickly he develops as a run defender.

NFL Outlook

Legitimate Day 2 draft upside if his frame fills out and his pass-rush plan develops. Edge rushers with his level of high school production and burst are always valued. His NFL ceiling depends on reaching about 250 pounds while keeping his first step. If he stays a speed-only rusher at 235 pounds, he projects more as a situational rusher or Day 3 pick.

Best Fit

A multiple or 3-4 hybrid defense that uses a stand-up Jack/rush linebacker and lets him attack upfield on passing downs, with a strong strength-and-conditioning program to build his frame. Texas under Muschamp is a strong match. The Longhorns also have a track record of developing long, lean edges into rotational pass rushers.
