Dayon Cooper is a 3-star Athlete from South Pittsburg, TN (South Pittsburg High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 705 nationally, No. 69 at ATH. Composite rating: 0.8789. Committed to University of Tennessee.

Physical Profile

Listed at 6-0, 180 lbs. Taller than 33% and heavier than 40% of 2027 Athlete prospects in the SEC Scouts database (15 with a listed size).

Play Style

Cooper is a playmaker who touches the ball in many ways. His film shows him at receiver, running back and quarterback on offense and mostly cornerback on defense. He wins with acceleration and quickness out of his breaks, turning short throws into long gains, and he is hard to tackle in space. On defense, his smooth hips and closing speed show up in man coverage. He scores more like a skill player who creates after the catch than a polished receiver who wins with routes.

Strengths

  • Big-play ability with the ball: 1,252 total yards and 17 TDs as a junior while playing WR, RB and QB, which earned 1A Mr. Football
  • Burst and long speed: sub-4.5 40, and scouts note good acceleration and top-end speed; dangerous on quick throws and screens where he catches and runs
  • Elusive in the open field, makes the first tackler miss, and his RB/QB snaps show he can handle the ball in many ways
  • Two-way versatility: smooth hip transitions at cornerback give him a fallback position on defense and help him read coverages as a receiver
  • Wanted by strong programs: offers from Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt and others, a commitment to FSU, then a flip to his home-state SEC school

Areas to Improve

  • Route-running detail: as a do-everything Class 1A player he hasn't had many reps running a full receiver route tree. He needs sharper breaks, better pacing and better ways to beat leverage against SEC defensive backs
  • Strength and play strength: needs to add weight to beat press coverage, finish contested catches and block on the perimeter in Tennessee's spread offense
  • Level of competition: his production came against 1A defenses, so his ability to separate from bigger, faster defenders is still unproven

College Projection

He projects as a slot receiver in Tennessee's spread offense under WR coach Kelsey Pope, the coach who recruited him. Expect a redshirt-type first year (playing in four or fewer games) focused on strength and route work, with possible early special-teams or return snaps because of his speed. A realistic path is rotating in the slot by Year 2 and competing to start by Years 3-4. If receiver is crowded, a move to nickel or corner is a real option.

Best Fit

A spread, up-tempo offense that schemes touches for its slot receiver (screens, jet motion, option routes) and gives a versatile athlete time to develop. Tennessee's offense and in-state ties make it a strong match. Programs with a deep receiver room should keep him open to a cornerback or nickel role.
