Scouting Report
Darrell Mattison is a 4-star Safety from Chicago, IL (Morgan Park High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 389 nationally, No. 48 at S. Composite rating: 0.8951. Committed to University of Mississippi.
Physical Profile
Listed at 6-1, 160 lbs. Taller than 44% and heavier than 0% of 2027 Safety prospects in the SEC Scouts database (32 with a listed size).
Play Style
Mattison plays as a free-roaming deep safety who wins with anticipation and range more than physicality. He reads the quarterback from depth, breaks on throws with little wasted movement and goes after the ball rather than playing for the tackle, which explains his interception total. In run support he triggers downhill willingly but relies on angles and effort more than strength. His return work shows that once the ball is in his hands he runs like an offensive player, with vision to find creases and speed to finish.
Strengths
- Ball production: 5 interceptions and 3 pass breakups as a junior show he reads the quarterback and finishes at the catch point rather than just being in the area.
- Range and instincts: evaluators consistently call him a natural center-fielder who takes efficient angles and closes quickly on throws to the sideline and down the seam, which is the key trait for a middle-of-the-field safety.
- Return and open-field ability: 2 kickoff-return touchdowns show vision, acceleration and long speed, giving him an immediate special-teams path and showing he is dangerous after interceptions.
- Willing tackler: he is described as physical in support despite his light weight, and his 47 tackles on a deep playoff team show he does not avoid contact.
- Market validation: offers from Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, Louisville, Iowa, Stanford and roughly 15 other Power 4 programs, plus a flip from a Big Ten commitment to an SEC program, show broad respect for his evaluation.
Areas to Improve
- Mass and play strength: at about 160-165 lb he needs significant weight gain to take on pulling guards, fill the alley against SEC running backs and avoid getting stuck on blocks from receivers and tight ends.
- Tackling finish at contact: a light frame tends to produce drag-down and ankle tackles. He needs to improve pad level, wrap technique and angles to limit yards after contact before he can be trusted as the last line of defense.
- Level of competition and processing: Chicago Public League offense is a step below SEC passing attacks. He will need to learn disguise, post-snap rotation and route-combination recognition in a more complex split-safety scheme.
- Durability: his lean build raises durability questions over a full SEC schedule until he adds functional weight.
College Projection
Year 1 (2027) is likely a redshirt or special-teams role (kick return, coverage units) while he goes through a full strength-and-nutrition cycle. By Year 2 he could be a rotational free safety at about 180-185 lb, with a realistic path to starting in Year 2 or Year 3 if the weight gain happens on schedule. His ceiling is a multi-year starting free safety with ball-hawking production. His floor is a special-teams contributor and third-down deep-coverage specialist.
NFL Outlook
As a 4-star at about #370-390 nationally, Mattison has day-3 NFL draft potential if his frame fills out. The NFL values free safeties with range and ball skills who have enough length to match up with tight ends. If he reaches 195+ lb without losing speed and turns his interception instincts into college production, he fits the mid-to-late-round safety profile. At his current weight he is not an NFL projection yet, so his draft value depends heavily on physical development.
Best Fit
His best fit is a defense that plays a lot of single-high and quarters coverage and asks the free safety to read and break on the ball rather than serve as an extra run defender, while giving him a year to develop physically. Ole Miss under Pete Golding fits that description. It also has immediate special-teams value for his return skills. He would be less suited to schemes that use safeties mainly as box or nickel players until he adds substantial weight.
