Scouting Report
Juelz Batiste is a 4-star Edge Rusher from New Orleans, LA (Edna Karr High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 434 nationally, No. 56 at EDGE. Composite rating: 0.8911. Committed to University of Mississippi.
Physical Profile
Listed at 6-5, 235 lbs. Taller than 69% and heavier than 50% of 2027 Edge Rusher prospects in the SEC Scouts database (26 with a listed size).
Play Style
Batiste is an attacking, upfield edge who plays with the aggressive mentality he said drew him to Texas's defensive line ('I'm an aggressive player'). His best reps come from a wide alignment, where he wins with get-off and bend around the corner, then finishes with length. He brings high effort on the backside and in pursuit. On film he looks most comfortable as a rush specialist and is still developing as a take-on defender against the run.
Strengths
- Explosive first step. Scouting notes from his commitment say he 'blows past blockers on his way to the quarterback,' which marks him as a get-off rusher rather than a power rusher.
- Length at 6-5. He can win the edge from a wide alignment and keep tackles from locking onto his frame, and it gives his future hand-fighting counters a physical base.
- Relentless pursuit. He is described as chasing plays from the backside with constant effort, which shows up in hustle sacks and tackles for loss.
- Proven against top competition. He was a major contributor on a state-championship Edna Karr team, one of Louisiana's top programs, so he has played against the state's best offensive linemen.
Areas to Improve
- Weight and anchor. He needs to reach about 250-260 lbs to hold up against SEC run schemes. Until then, offenses can run right at him.
- Pass-rush plan. His film value comes mostly from speed. He needs a counter move (inside spin, long-arm, or chop-rip) for when college tackles match his get-off.
- Run-fit discipline. Speed rushers at his size tend to rush past the ball carrier on runs. He needs to learn to set the edge, squeeze, and keep contain against zone read and pin-pull runs.
College Projection
He projects as a stand-up rush end / JACK in Pete Golding's front, with defensive line coach Randall Joyner overseeing his development. Year 1 is likely a redshirt, or a situational third-down rusher and special-teams player while he adds weight. With normal strength gains, he could become a rotational pass rusher in Year 2 and push for a starting role by Years 3-4. That timeline could move faster if he reaches 250+ lbs without losing burst.
NFL Outlook
He is a mid-to-late-round developmental prospect whose pro value depends on his frame. Edges who are 6-5, bend well, and win with first-step quickness get drafted if they reach 255-265 lbs and produce double-digit college sacks. If he stays light, his likely pro path is a rotational pass-rush and special-teams role. If the weight and a counter move both come, he has Day 2 upside.
Best Fit
Ole Miss is a strong fit. Golding's multiple, pressure-heavy front uses a stand-up edge rusher, the Rebels value speed off the edge, and his father played at Ole Miss, which gives him a family tie to the program. Schematically, he is best in a 3-4 or hybrid 4-2-5 that lines him up wide on passing downs and gives him time in a college strength program before asking him to hold up every down against the run.
