Taelyn Mayo is a 4-star Cornerback from Lewisville, TX (Lewisville High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 274 nationally, No. 22 at CB. Composite rating: 0.9098. Committed to University of Mississippi.

Physical Profile

Listed at 6-4, 175 lbs. Taller than 100% and heavier than 31% of 2027 Cornerback prospects in the SEC Scouts database (32 with a listed size).

Play Style

Mayo projects best as a boundary corner who uses his length at the line and his reactions downfield. His production is built on playing the ball. The high pass-breakup count points to a corner who stays in phase and attacks the hands and ball late rather than just running with receivers. The forced fumbles show a punch-out instinct when he comes up to make plays. His receiver snaps show in how he tracks the ball in the air. He is most comfortable in press-bail and Cover 3/quarters looks, where he can squeeze routes toward the sideline and use his length to recover.

Strengths

  • Length and catch-point disruption: a 6-3/6-4 frame with long arms lets him contest and crowd receivers at the catch point. That shows up in 11 pass breakups and 3 interceptions as a junior.
  • Ball production and takeaways: as a junior he had 3 INTs, 11 PBUs and 2 forced fumbles. That is 16 plays on the ball or forced turnovers, a real playmaking profile rather than a 'tall but passive' one.
  • Reactive anticipation: evaluators point to his reactions as unusually good for his build. That points to good eyes and route recognition, which let him close gaps his size would otherwise open.
  • Two-way experience: he is also listed as a wide receiver, which usually means better ball skills and a sense of how receivers set up breaks.

Areas to Improve

  • Weight and play strength: he needs to get from roughly 180 to about 195-200 pounds so he can hold up in press, win the contact at the line, and stay healthy through an SEC season. His 29 junior tackles point to limited run-support volume.
  • Short-area change of direction: long-limbed corners can be exposed by quick-breaking slants, comebacks and quick routes from shiftier slot receivers. He needs to tighten his pedal-to-drive footwork and cut down on hip-turn wasted motion.
  • Tackling consistency: he has to become a firmer, wrap-up tackler on the perimeter and in the screen game, beyond punching the ball out.

College Projection

He will likely spend 2027 as a developmental reserve and special-teams contributor, possibly as a redshirt, while adding weight in Ole Miss's strength program. Once his frame fills out, he projects as a rotation corner in 2028 and could compete for a starting boundary job in 2029. His long-term role is an outside corner who can match up with big X receivers.

NFL Outlook

The NFL values his traits: 6-3+ height, length and a proven ability to make plays on the ball. If he adds 15-20 pounds without losing movement skills and shows he can play press, he has a Day 2 ceiling as a long boundary corner. If his change of direction stays stiff, a move to safety is the likely fallback, and his size and ball skills would translate well there.

Best Fit

A press-heavy or pattern-matching defense that wants long boundary corners and can afford a redshirt year for strength development. Pete Golding's defense at Ole Miss fits: it values length on the outside and has room for developmental defensive backs. A quarters or Cover 3 scheme that lets him play with his eyes on the quarterback and drive on the ball would get the most out of his anticipation and ball production.
