Scouting Report
David Segarra III is a 4-star Running Back from Duncan, SC (James Byrnes High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 108 nationally, No. 8 at RB. Composite rating: 0.9513. Committed to Louisiana State University.
Physical Profile
Listed at 5-10, 200 lbs. Taller than 21% and heavier than 46% of 2027 Running Back prospects in the SEC Scouts database (24 with a listed size).
Play Style
Based on his measurables and production (not a verified film breakdown), he projects as a one-cut, downhill zone runner who plays with contact balance. His build and wrestling background point to a back who finishes runs with his pads low and falls forward. His high yards-per-carry suggests he can also turn a crease into a chunk run instead of settling for the yards that are blocked. He looks more like a compact every-down back than a pure scat or pure power back.
Strengths
- Efficient production at volume: 1,460 yards at roughly 8.4 yards per carry with 17 TD as a junior means he created explosive runs, not just carries
- Ready-made SEC frame at 5-10/205, which lowers the physical development risk and gives him an earlier path to snaps in pass protection
- Rated consistently across the major services: No. 7 RB nationally per Rivals and 247Sports, a 0.9513 composite and an ESPN grade of 81. Evaluators agree on him, which lowers projection risk.
- Wrestling background: leverage, balance and hand strength that carry over to breaking tackles and holding up blitzers
- Won a head-to-head battle with his parents' alma mater (South Carolina) plus Tennessee and Florida, which shows how highly SEC staffs value him
Areas to Improve
- Receiving role is unproven: no verified receiving production from his high school career was found. Running routes from the backfield and the slot will matter in Kiffin's offense, which spreads the ball to its backs.
- Pass protection: like nearly every high school feature back, he'll need to learn to identify blitzers and take them on at SEC speed before he can be a three-down back
- Top-end speed isn't verified by testing. Whether his long runs hold up against SEC safeties' closing speed is the main open question.
College Projection
He should arrive in Baton Rouge ready for rotational carries in Year 1 (2027) because he already has the weight. LSU's backfield has recently featured high-end recruits such as Harlem Berry, so Segarra should expect a 2-3 back rotation at first. Early work on special teams and in short-yardage packages is realistic. A realistic path to lead-back carries is Year 2 or Year 3, depending on how quickly he develops as a pass protector and receiver.
NFL Outlook
He has Day 2-3 draft potential if his college production matches his recruiting profile. At 5-10/205 his size already fits the NFL, so his draft stock will depend on verified testing speed, receiving versatility and pass-protection reliability. NFL teams pay for backs who contribute on third down, not for early-down-only runners.
Best Fit
A spread offense with zone-running concepts that uses its backs as receivers, which is what he has in Lane Kiffin's LSU system. The fit is strongest if the staff develops him as a receiver out of the backfield rather than using him only as a between-the-tackles runner.
