Scouting Report
Tristin Hughes is a 4-star Athlete from Rocky River, OH (Rocky River High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 276 nationally, No. 34 at ATH. Composite rating: 0.9097. Committed to University of Kentucky.
Physical Profile
Listed at 6-1, 190 lbs. Taller than 53% and heavier than 73% of 2027 Athlete prospects in the SEC Scouts database (15 with a listed size).
Play Style
Hughes plays like a converted skill player who likes contact. He finds the ball in the air, attacks throws in front of him and tackles well in space. His turnover numbers (INTs plus forced fumbles) suggest he plays aggressively toward the ball rather than waiting to react. His offensive background shows in how he reads routes and in what he does with the ball after a takeaway. He projects best playing in the box or near the line (strong safety, star or nickel) rather than as a pure deep safety, though his range may allow a split-field two-deep role.
Strengths
- Ball production that shows up both in games and against top competition: 3 INT and 3 PBU as a junior, then multiple interceptions at The Opening regional in Indianapolis. His hands and instincts at the catch point are proven, not projected.
- Physical, dependable tackler: 65 tackles and 2 forced fumbles in 14 games. Reports specifically praise his physicality and tackling, which means he can play downhill in run support instead of being a coverage-only safety.
- Offensive playmaking that carries over to defense: 1,332 receiving yards and 27 total TDs as a junior. He understands routes and body positioning from the receiver's side and can make plays after turnovers.
- Versatility: he took snaps at safety, cornerback, receiver and running back. That gives a college staff options at strong safety, nickel or even boundary corner depending on how his speed tests.
Areas to Improve
- Defensive reps and technique: splitting time on offense means fewer reps on the fine points of safety play, like eye discipline, pedal-and-drive, reading formations and handling pre-snap disguise. Expect a learning curve on SEC coverage checks and rotations.
- Man coverage against speed: his long speed and hip fluidity in single-high or man-to-man against SEC receivers isn't verified by testing. Adding weight without losing burst will also matter more than usual, since his value depends on range.
- Level of competition: Rocky River isn't a Northeast Ohio powerhouse, so his tackling angles and pursuit need to hold up against faster, bigger college offenses.
College Projection
He should enroll at Kentucky in 2027 and contribute on special teams right away (kick coverage, possibly returns), with a chance to rotate in at safety or nickel as a true freshman. A redshirt or light-rotation year to add strength and learn the system is the realistic floor. He projects as a starter by year two or three and could become an all-conference strong safety or nickel if the coverage technique catches up to his ball skills. Recruiting note: Hughes has already switched commitments once (Syracuse to Kentucky) and set up a Louisville official visit before skipping it, so Kentucky should keep working to hold him until he signs.
NFL Outlook
He has a mid-round draft profile if he develops. Productive, ball-hawking strong safeties or nickels around 6-1/200-205 with special-teams value are a common NFL type, and his hands and tackling fit that mold. Moving into Day 2 range depends on testing speed and change of direction, and on showing he can match up with slot receivers and tight ends in man coverage against SEC opponents.
Best Fit
A multiple, disguise-heavy defense that uses a strong safety or nickel near the line and values versatility. Kentucky's system, with its hybrid roles and quarters-based coverage, suits him well. His turnover instincts and physicality also fit any quarters or match-coverage scheme that keeps the play in front of him and lets him drive on the ball, rather than a system that asks him to play single-high deep middle every snap.
