Scouting Report
Malachi Brown is a 4-star Defensive Line from Corbin, KY (Corbin High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 379 nationally, No. 20 at DL. Composite rating: 0.8962. Committed to University of Kentucky.
Physical Profile
Listed at 6-4, 260 lbs. Taller than 54% and heavier than 0% of 2027 Defensive Line prospects in the SEC Scouts database (26 with a listed size).
Play Style
He plays physical, downhill and run-first. Off the snap he gets his hands inside quickly, keeps his feet under him, and uses his lower body to set a firm edge or split a single block. He can find the ball after he has beaten the block, which explains the 11 TFL. As a pass rusher he is mostly a power rusher who collapses the pocket and wins late with effort rather than bend. His motor shows up on backside pursuit and in how often he finishes plays.
Strengths
- Wins with lower-body leverage: he plays with good pad level and moves blockers backward at the point of attack instead of just holding his ground, which projects well against Power and Duo schemes
- Strong, active hands: he gets the first strike and can re-anchor after giving ground, which evaluators call advanced for his age and a key trait for an interior run defender
- Productive and versatile: 66 tackles, 11 TFL, 8 sacks and KY 4A All-State as a junior, with snaps at multiple alignments, so he gives a defensive coordinator 3-tech/4i/5-tech flexibility
- Relentless motor: evaluators say he consistently chases plays from the backside, and several of his tackles come from effort rather than scheme
- Recruited at a national level: holding offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Tennessee and Miami confirms that the 4-star grade is real, not just an in-state bump
Areas to Improve
- Pass-rush plan: his sacks mostly come from power and effort against Class 4A blockers. He needs a developed counter (swipe, arm-over, or club-and-rip) plus a better get-off to win one-on-one against SEC guards
- Adding mass without losing twitch: to play inside full-time he needs to get to about 290 while keeping his first-step quickness. If he stays near 270, he needs more speed to hold up at end on the edge
- Level of competition: against small-school Kentucky linemen, a lot of his wins come from being physically bigger and stronger. His technique (block recognition, double-team fits, gap discipline) will be tested much harder right away in the SEC
College Projection
He is likely to join Kentucky's 2027 class alongside fellow DL commits Griff Galloway and Elijah Brown. A redshirt or rotational-special-teams first year (2027) is the most realistic path while he adds weight and polishes his hand usage. By his redshirt freshman season (2028) he projects as a rotational 3-tech/5-tech on early downs. He should become a multi-year starter from 2029 on if his frame fills out as expected. A best case is a Kentucky-style physical interior starter who gives 35-45 snaps a game and makes plays against the run.
NFL Outlook
He has a Day 3 path to the NFL (rounds 5-7 or a priority free agent) if he grows into a 290-300 lb 3-technique and becomes a real interior pass rusher. His NFL value depends on showing more than 'strong and effortful' in college. He needs to show consistent first-step quickness and a pass-rush plan in SEC play. If he tops out as a 270 lb power end without much bend, his more likely ceiling is a college starter who gets NFL camp invites.
Best Fit
An odd-front or multiple-front defense that asks linemen to control gaps, play 4i/5-tech, and take on double teams, with interior pass-rush chances on passing downs. Kentucky's physical, run-first defensive philosophy fits him well. He also fits any Power 4 program with a patient strength staff that can add about 20 lbs of good weight to his frame.
