Scouting Report
Ja'Bios Smith is a 4-star Linebacker from Swainsboro, GA (Swainsboro High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 184 nationally, No. 2 at LB. Composite rating: 0.9279. Committed to University of Florida.
Physical Profile
Listed at 6-2, 205 lbs. Taller than 29% and heavier than 15% of 2027 Linebacker prospects in the SEC Scouts database (34 with a listed size).
Play Style
Smith plays like an aggressive, downhill off-ball linebacker. He diagnoses quickly, attacks gaps and doesn't avoid contact despite his thin frame. On film he stays clean through traffic, uses his hands to shed blockers, and runs to the football with good pursuit angles, so he finishes plays from the backside as well as between the tackles. His tackle-for-loss numbers (8 as a junior) come from shooting gaps rather than blitz schemes. His running back experience shows in how easily he moves in space and in his instincts around the ball.
Strengths
- Takes on and gets through traffic: 247Sports' Andrew Ivins calls him a rugged off-ball linebacker who can 'bang between the tackles' and 'sift through traffic and defeat blocks while shooting gaps.' That shows downhill mentality and hand use you rarely see from a 195-pounder.
- Sideline-to-sideline range: evaluators credit him with good pursuit angles and closing range on the second level, and his jumping marks in track support that explosiveness.
- Proven, consistent production: 88 tackles, 5 TFL and 3 forced fumbles as a sophomore, then 72 tackles, 8 TFL, 1 sack and 1 fumble recovery as a junior, so he has been a full-time impact defender since his second varsity season.
- Two-way skill and ball skills: 76 carries for 457 yards and 12 TDs as a junior show vision, balance and comfort with the ball in his hands, which carries over to taking good paths to the ballcarrier and making plays after takeaways.
- High-level recruiting interest: offered and prioritized by Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M and South Carolina, which confirms the evaluation across several SEC staffs, not just one.
Areas to Improve
- Adding mass and strength: at 195 he is 30-plus pounds below a typical SEC inside linebacker, and he must add weight and keep his range to hold up against Power Four guards and climbing centers every snap.
- Level of competition and testing: his production came in regional Georgia small-school play, and without verified testing numbers his speed against SEC-level backs and tight ends has to be projected.
- Coverage development: with little snap-by-snap evidence of his zone depth and man matchups on tight ends and backs, his pass-drop eyes and route recognition need work to become a three-down linebacker.
College Projection
He projects as a WILL/weakside linebacker, where his range and pursuit matter more than taking on blocks in the box. The most likely path is special teams plus a strength-program focus in 2027, with rotational linebacker snaps in 2028 once he's around 220-225 pounds. With normal weight gain he's a realistic starter by his third year (2029). Florida's linebacker-heavy staff under Jon Sumrall, including LB coach Greg Gasparato, is a good fit for the technical side of his development.
NFL Outlook
His NFL chances depend on the frame. An NFL weakside linebacker needs to be around 6-3 and 230 pounds with range, and Smith's length, explosiveness and physical style match what NFL scouts look for at that spot. If he gets to 225-230 while keeping his speed and becomes a reliable coverage player, he could be a Day 2-3 draft pick after three or four college years. If the weight doesn't come, his range and special-teams value still give him a Day 3 or undrafted free agent path. A first-round projection would take reaching that weight plus multi-year SEC production.
Best Fit
A 4-3 or 4-2-5 scheme with a weakside or run-and-chase linebacker role, where a 2-gap defensive front keeps linemen off him so he can flow and use his range, and a program with a proven linebacker development and strength staff. Florida's staff, with its linebacker background, fits that well. An early special-teams role gives him snaps while he builds his body.
