Chance Gilbert is a 4-star Safety from Sharpsburg, GA (East Coweta High School) in the 2027 class. Ranked No. 59 nationally, No. 3 at S. Composite rating: 0.9756. Committed to Auburn University.

Physical Profile

Listed at 6-0, 170 lbs. Taller than 22% and heavier than 3% of 2027 Safety prospects in the SEC Scouts database (32 with a listed size).

Play Style

He plays like an instinctive ball-hawk. Based on the stat profile and how the services describe him, he reads the quarterback, breaks on throws with good anticipation, and plays the ball rather than the receiver. That explains the 5+ pass breakups a year and the multi-interception seasons. His range lets him cover a lot of ground as a single-high or split-field safety, and his hips let him carry slot receivers man-to-man, which is why some services grade him as a corner. When he gets the ball he thinks like a receiver and looks to score immediately, as the 90-yard return shows. He fills in run support willingly, but he is more of a range-and-rally tackler than an enforcer.

Strengths

  • Ball production that keeps rising: 2 INTs and 8 pass breakups as a sophomore, 3 INTs as a junior, and at least 3 INTs already in his 2026 senior season. He is a playmaker, not just a coverage player.
  • Scores after the catch on both sides of the ball: a 90-yard pick-six against Perry, plus 16 catches for 393 yards and 5 TDs on offense as a junior. He has natural hands and vision once the ball is in them.
  • Can play several spots. The services list him at safety, corner and hybrid, so a college staff can use him deep, at nickel or outside depending on matchups.
  • Proven against top competition: he played in the Under Armour All-America Game as a junior, was a preseason Class 7A all-state pick, and earned offers from Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Clemson, LSU, Tennessee, Texas, Miami and FSU.
  • Reliable tackling volume for a skinny DB: 44 tackles as a sophomore and 53 as a junior, so he is willing to come downhill.

Areas to Improve

  • Needs more strength and weight. At 170 pounds he will lose to SEC tight ends and pulling linemen in run support, and big receivers can push him around at the catch point. He needs 15-25 pounds of good weight without losing his change-of-direction ability.
  • Needs to settle on a position and refine that technique. Splitting time between safety and corner, and playing receiver too, may have slowed specific skills like press footwork at corner or deep-safety eye discipline and communication. Auburn has to pick a home for him.
  • Tackling technique against bigger ball carriers. His tackle numbers are good, but at his size he has to learn leverage and angle tackling rather than high, arm-driven tackles to be dependable as a last line of defense.

College Projection

Most likely a safety or nickel at Auburn, where co-DC and safeties coach Tim Banks can use his range and ball skills. Since he's committed as a 2027 prospect, he could enroll early (January 2027), which would add a spring of strength work before his first season. Realistic timeline: special teams and rotational dime/nickel snaps as a true freshman, since Auburn's secondary depth is thin, then competing for a starting job in year two once he is around 185-190 pounds. His ball skills and early readiness in coverage could speed that up. If he plays at the size he's listed now, his role will be limited to passing downs.

NFL Outlook

He has Day 2 draft potential if he adds weight while keeping his movement skills. NFL teams value long, instinctive DBs who can play several spots and produce takeaways, and his ability to line up at safety, nickel and corner is the versatility that raises draft stock. His ceiling depends on reaching 190+ pounds with verified speed in the 4.4s. If he plateaus physically, he projects as a sub-package DB and special teamer, likely a Day 3 pick.

Best Fit

A multiple, disguise-heavy defense that mixes quarters and split-safety looks, where a rangy DB can rotate between deep half, robber and nickel before the snap and make plays on the ball. Auburn under Golesh and Banks fits: he gets a clear path to playing time in an unsettled secondary, and Banks's safety background suits his skills. He is a weaker fit for a heavy single-high defense that asks the safeties to be downhill run-fitters.
