LEAD STORY: Mark Mitchell Files Suit Seeking 2026-27 Eligibility
Missouri forward Mark Mitchell has joined a lawsuit filed in Louisville seeking an additional year of eligibility for the 2026-27 season, according to Matt Jones of KSR. The 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward is asking the court for a restraining order and temporary injunctive relief — and, per Jones, has requested that the judge open the transfer portal from now until next Tuesday.
The legal argument centers on class-year fairness. Mitchell played at Duke during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons before transferring to Missouri for 2024-25 and 2025-26. The suit contends that 2022-class athletes are being treated unfairly relative to earlier classes who received an extra season tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, noting Mitchell competed against players who logged five or six seasons. The plaintiffs argue they face immediate and irreparable harm if barred from competing in 2026-27. Mitchell is uncertain where he would play if granted the year and remains limited in his ability to communicate with coaches under NCAA rules.
The jurisdictional wrinkle is what makes this an SEC-wide story: Jones reported any injunction issued in the case would apply only in Kentucky, which puts the Wildcats squarely in play for a proven high-major scorer. Mitchell averaged 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists last season at Missouri while shooting 54.7% from the field and 38.8% from 3-point range. He was at his best against Kentucky, posting 21 points, four assists and a rebound in Missouri's 73-68 upset at Rupp Arena, then dropping 32 points and seven rebounds on 13-of-21 shooting (2-for-2 from deep) in the SEC Tournament rematch.
