NCAA 5-in-5 Eligibility Rule Unlikely to Benefit Current Seniors
A potential NCAA rule change that would grant student-athletes five years of eligibility within a five-year window is expected to pass, but it appears it will not be retroactive, impacting seniors across the conference, including Kentucky Wildcats guard Otega Oweh.
On Monday, NCAA President Charlie Baker expressed optimism that the proposal will be approved by the Division I Board of Directors. However, he told ESPN that the recommendation will be against implementing the rule retroactively for players who have already exhausted their collegiate eligibility. "If you’ve used up your eligibility, you’ve used it up,” Baker stated, signaling a firm stance on the issue.
This development means that Oweh, a key figure for the Wildcats, will likely not have the option to return for a fifth season of play. The Kentucky basketball staff will now probably operate as if his return is off the table, shifting focus to players who are certain to be eligible for the upcoming season. While this appears to be the final word for now, the decision is expected to face legal challenges from graduating seniors across the nation who may sue for the extra year, a route that has proven successful in past disputes with the NCAA.
